Wesal TV spoke to seven Whitby voters at polling locations on Monday, October 26, as residents cast ballots in the municipal election, with property taxes, housing affordability and concerns about local leadership among the issues on voters' minds.
Dale Fancy, 74, who has lived in Whitby since 1982, called voting an obligation, especially when many people face financial pressures, and pointed to property taxes as a major concern. Jerome Clarke, who has voted in municipal elections since becoming eligible, cited construction and traffic disruptions and said he wants the next council to keep its campaign promises and work in the town's best interests.
First-time voters Mason Gladman and Bastian Guddat said the election was a chance to help shape the community's future, while other voters raised affordable housing, homelessness, seniors' safety and youth issues. Polls closed at 8 p.m. Monday, and the town says it will publish unofficial results after polls close; the new municipal term begins in November.
